MALYA COLONY-John S. Hofer, 88, died of natural causes
peacefully on Tuesday evening, July 5, at his family home at the
East Malta Colony. Funeral services will be held at the East Malta Colony on July 8 at 11:00. Condolences for the family may be left at www.kirkwoodfuneralhome.com. Kirkwood Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
John was born December 2, 1922 at Menno, South Dakota to George & Mary (Stahl) Hofer. His family moved to Grass Range, MT while he was a teenager. On June 4, 1950, he married Susie J. Hofer in Grass Range. They started a family of seven children. In 1960, he moved to start a family farm at the Turner Colony, where he was manager of the pig barn. In 1984, he moved to the East Malta Colony, where he resided until his death.
John grew up with a love for animals. He got his nickname, Cowboy John, due to his joy of riding and training horses. He dedicated his life to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was never found without a piece of candy in his pocket to share with his grandkids. He loved telling stories and reminiscing about the good old days. He was also an avid recycler. John was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Survivors include his two sons and daughter-in-laws of the East Malta Colony; John Jr. (Matilda) and Joe (Marie); four daughters and son-in-laws, Bertha (Peter) Hofer and Barbara (Danny) Hofer of Turner, Marie (John) Walter of Raymore, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Annie (Paul) Walter of Fort MacLeod, Alberta, Canada; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George (Janette) Hofer of Stratmore, Alberta, Canada; one sister-in-law, Barbara Hofer of Smokey Lake, Alberta, Canada; 22 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son (Mikey), one brother, four half-brothers, one half-sister, and two son-in-laws, Peter Hofer and John Walter. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and relatives.
"When we are born, we meet people whom we think will be with us for our entire life's journey. These people are our parents. Our parents are with us for as long as we absolutely need them. They too have journeys they must complete. We live on with the memories of their love, affection, friendship, guidance and their ever-presence."
