MALTA-Howard
James Smith, 79, a retired farmer and rancher, died Thursday,
April 7, 2011 at the Phillips County Hospital of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 12, at the Malta Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Malta Cemetery. Viewing will be Monday evening at the funeral home. Howard was born July 21, 1931 to Jack & Edna (Fry) Smith at the family home South of Dodson. He went to school in Dodson. He farmed and ranched his entire life. He enjoyed historical photos, taking people on tours to their original homesteads, watching the water run in the spring and the changing of the seasons at the ranch. He enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren in all of the numerous events. Howard played Whist with the "boys" most every day at the Mint. It didn't matter what your age, Howard was a real Ladies man. He enjoyed making the girls feel special, always flirting with them. His knowledge of Phillips County will greatly missed. He was committed to preserving a slice of history that was fading with the ageing of the community.
Howard married Wilma Mary (Judy) Boe on January 16, 1960, they divorced, in 1964. he married Revena Dorothy Feigel Lundstrum on June 19, 1971, she passed away March 22, 1975.Howard then married Jane Ruth (Garlinghouse) on Dec. 8, 1978, they later divorced and were remarried on July 27, 1982, She passed away on March 25, 1999.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Michelle, grandchildren, Caitlin, Ryan and Rebecca all of Malta; brothers, Harvey (Mary), and Franklin both of Malta; nephews John and Greg Smith, both of Malta; nieces, Deanna Arnold of Malta, Lenora McEwen of Sunburst and their families; longtime friend Judy Crowder.
Howard and longtime friend J.J. Smith are enjoying the spring together.
