— Gisela Miller, age 70, a homemaker and retired school cook
died of heart failure on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at her home.Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Kirkwood Memorial Chapel in Malta. Interment will be in the Malta Cemetery. Condolences for the family may be left at www.kirkwoodfuneralhome.com. Kirkwood Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
Gisela was born on August 8, 1941, in Herschberg, Germany to Ludwig and Lena (Horn) Michel. She grew up in post-war Germany, and had many stories of overcoming difficult times with hard work and often with the laughter and companionship of family and friends.
In 1957 she married Thomas J. Miller, while he was stationed at Rammstein Air Force Base near her hometown. Tom was promptly transferred to Labrador, Canada where dependents were not allowed, so Gisela found herself living with her new mother and father-in-law in Harlem, Montana. There she joined the flurry of activity of his large family, and built many close relationships and fond memories. Gisela and Tom’s military life took them across the U.S. and overseas including Spokane, Virginia, Missouri, California, and the Philippines. They returned to Germany for a tour of duty in 1969 with their two children in tow, and enjoyed five years of treasured times with her parents, siblings, and extended family.
The couple retired to Malta in 1972 where she resided until her death. Gisela worked in Malta School food services for 26 years (1977-2005). She was an accomplished baker, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and reading. She spent many summer weekends camping with extended family. She was devoted to her family, and always had a warm welcome for visitors in her home.
She will be missed by her husband of 54 years, Tom; her son, Thomas (Wendy) Miller of Malta, her daughter, Teresa Sayers of Port Orchard, Washington; granddaughters, Malanie Miller of Saco, and Danielle (Doug) Brugger of Madison, Wisconsin. She is also survived by numerous relatives in Germany, including her brother Alfred (Louisa) Michel, sister Inge (Gunter) Berger, and many nieces and nephews all of whom she adored even though many miles separated them. She shared in the lives of her extended family here in the U.S. including many dear brother- and sister-in-laws, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Kurt Horn, and a daughter, Nancy Ann.
