Click for larger image MALTA-George A. Ames, 94, a WWII Army veteran and retired farmer-rancher, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, at a nursing home in Billings.

    Rosary will be 7:00 P.M., Wednesday at the Kirkwood Funeral Home in Malta. Funeral Mass will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, Sept. 29, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will be in the Malta Cemetery. Condolences for the family may be left at www.kirkwoodfuneralhome.com. Kirkwood Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.

    George was born November 1, 1916 in Red Wing, Minnesota the son of George Albert and Florence (Nelson) Ames. The family came to Montana in 1925 to start their family farm. After his schooling George started working for area farmer and ranchers, working cattle, herding sheep and all around ranch hand. He enlisted in the Army in September of 1940 and served until 1945. He was served in New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon. Following the war he bought a blackberry and blueberry farm in Washington. Missing Montana he sold that farm and purchased a truck and started his trucking business. He hauled grain, hay, cattle and most anything else, he even hauled buildings. He married Dorothy Corine Plouffe on Nov. 1, 1951 in Malta. In George’s own words, “she was the best thing that ever happened to me.” He bought his last farm hear Malta to have a place to raise his seven children and be able to be with them.. George enjoyed hunting and camping, his family and his grandchildren.

    Survivors include his sons, George Lewis (Karen) Ames of Marbleton, Wyoming, Donald Lee (Cindy) Ames of Spokane, Wash.; daughters, Peggy Marie Ames (Charles) Nerud of Circle, Jody Ann (Joe) Martin of Wilder, Idaho, Elaine Corine (Sam) Ward of Westend, North Carolina, Sandra Jean (Art) Henry of Havre, Carol Ann (Brad) Zimmer of Billings; 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren.
