Loren was born May 4, 1975 in Rosebud, South Dakota. He was adopted by his grandparents, Clem and Vivian Janis. As a juvenile, he got in trouble with the law; he said it took two officers to take him to jail. Later he was beat up by an officer. This made him take up boxing for 3 years. At sixteen he attended Chemewa Indian School in Salem, Oregon. He met Marcy Lodge in September of 1991. She graduated in May of 1992, so they stayed with his grandparents, later they moved back to Harlem. Loren attended Harlem High School and worked at Tubb’s Oil before it became E-Z Mart while Marcy went to Fort Belknap College. In 1995 he started as a Dispatcher & Jailer for Blaine County. While doing this he took up other Martial Arts which included KO-KO-RO-KAN up to his Brown Belt, then later TAE KWONDO and got his Red Belt. He took other styles which were HAPIKIDO, JUDO, Kick-Boxing and WAN CHUNG, this style wasn’t rank in belt color.

In 1997 he went to work for Formberg and graduated from the police academy. He then came back to Harlem in February 2000 and worked for the Harlem Police Dept. Around September of 2000 he was a full-time Deputy Sheriff for Blaine County.

On May 29, 2003, he was shot in the Line of Duty with his partner and best friend, Josh Rutherford, whom was killed in the Line of Duty. Loren took this really hard as he and Josh were the “Best of Buds”. They worked out together, Four-Wheeled together as well as played video games together. Josh spent his last Thanksgiving and Christmas before his passing with Loren’s family.

Loren suffered from Post Dramatic Stress Disorder in 2004, and moved to Denver to live with his brother “Chip”. Mike Matthews, Josh’s Father, got a hold of Loren to work in Poplar and later move to work in Wolf Point. They stayed in Wolf Point for about two years. In 2006 Blaine County wanted Loren to come back and help rebuild Blaine County Sheriffs Department. The family missed Wolf Point so they moved back in 2008. In December 2009, due to his cancer, Loren wanted to come back home where he felt at home. This is beginning and this is the End. Even in his last days he was a true officer and always wanted to help and encourage other officers. He had a passion for his job and doing what is right and up holding the law. He was a private person and never wanted to be fussed over, just respected.
