MALTA-Robert
Francis Phelan, 86, WWII Army Veteran and retired fireman, died
Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at the
Phillips
County
Hospital
of natural causes.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Monday, August 3, at the Kirkwood
Memorial Chapel in
Malta
. Interment with military honors will be in the
Malta
Cemetery

Kirkwood Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his daughters, Linda Phelan of Holly Hill, Florida,
Alice Phelan of Polson, Eileen Turner of Dodson; eight grandchildren,
four great-grandchildren.
Robert was born March 1, 1923 in
Waterbury
,
Connecticut
the son of Robert F. and Mary (Sheehy) Phelan. He was raised and
educated in
Waterbury
and graduated from high school there. 
He
entered the Army in 1943 and served in Northern France, Rhineland,
Ardennes and
Central Europe
. After his discharge in late 1945 he returned to
Waterbury
. He married Shirley Moss in 1946 in
Waterbury
. She preceded him in death on April 11, 1998. Bob joined the Waterbury
Fire Department in 1951 and retired in 1982. He worked several extra
jobs; Mercer& Dunbar Armored Cars in
Waterbury
, Pinkerton Armored Cars in
Hartford
, ADT Security in
Waterbury
. He moved to
Malta
in 2005 to be close to his daughters. Bob enjoyed rocks and minerals as
hobbies.
